Primary effects
- Alcohol reduces stress and tension, increases self-confidence, and mildly uplifts mood, leading to euphoria with continued dosing.
- It causes blood vessels to expand and heart rate to speed up, resulting in warm, sociable, and talkative feelings at moderate doses.
Peak character
- At moderate levels, users feel sociable and talkative; with higher doses, confidence and ego inflate while cognitive function diminishes.
- The peak can be extremely pleasurable, marked by euphoria and release of inhibitions, but cognitive impairment, slurred speech, and loss of balance quickly follow with increasing intake.
- Users may become reckless, uninhibited, and potentially aggressive or violent, with severely impaired coordination and consciousness.
Negatives / side effects
- Alcohol has a low effective-to-fatal dose ratio, is highly addictive, and causes severe physical and psychological harm with frequent high-dose use.
- Higher doses lead to significantly slowed reaction times, slurred speech, blurred vision, impaired coordination, and can cause drowsiness and dehydration.
- Very high doses (>12 units) risk alcohol poisoning, coma, vomiting, stupor, and death; it also dramatically increases the risk of accidents and personal harm.
Aftereffects / comedown
- If redosing stops early, sedation and drowsiness kick in, leading to reduced restorative sleep, with aftereffects ranging from barely noticeable to tolerable.
- High doses lead to severe hangovers with extreme headache, nausea, vomiting, and general lethargy that can last all day, sometimes with lingering listlessness and depression.
- Alcohol is the most destructive intoxicant, killing thousands annually, and can lead to binge-drinking patterns or daily reliance, both fraught with danger and potential addiction.
Reagent testing
Adulterant detection: Methanol contamination (dangerous) can be tested with a methanol test strip or colorimetric methanol detection kit. Standard drug reagents not applicable.
For home-distilled or illicit spirits: use a methanol test kit. Colorimetric drug reagents are not applicable. A refractometer/hydrometer measures ABV but not methanol.
