Experience

Primary effects

  • Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine stimulate the brain, increase heart rate, constrict blood vessels (increasing blood pressure), and expand bronchial tubes (aiding breathing).
  • Causes an increase in metabolism due to thermogenic properties, leading to increased body heat.

Peak character

  • Produces definite stimulation milder than some chemical stimulants, with increased focus and a minor hint of euphoria.
  • Can cause a slight jittery feeling and possibly an increased heart rate.

Negatives / side effects

  • Potential for increased heart rate and blood pressure due to vasoconstriction; exercise caution with dosage.
  • Many internet comments cite jitteriness as an issue; be mindful of this.

Aftereffects / comedown

  • Can interfere with sleep, making afternoon naps or nighttime rest difficult.

Reagent testing

Recommended reagents
Expected reactions
MarquisOrange/brown (ephedrine)
Chen-KaoBlue (ephedrine/pseudoephedrine confirmation)

Adulterant detection: Ephedra sinica — ephedrine/pseudoephedrine content. Chen-Kao is specific for ephedrine class.

Chen-Kao test is a useful specific test for ephedrine-class compounds.
