Experience

Primary effects

  • Yohimbe acts as a stimulant and vasodilator, with notable aphrodisiac effects at lower doses, enhancing sexual interest and function.
  • At higher doses, it is reported to be hallucinogenic and has been used as an additive in iboga rituals.

Peak character

  • A clear, specific stimulation with a light head buzz and mental alertness, accompanied by a gentle, dreamlike recreational headspace.
  • Physical warmth, slight sweating, and prominent, pleasant sexual aspects.
  • A sense of being nicely charged, tingly, and flushed, settling into a positive and distinct experience.

Negatives / side effects

  • The ratio of effective dose to fatal dose is low, making it relatively easy to overdose with potentially tragic consequences.
  • Can cause blood pressure to rise slightly above normal.

Aftereffects / comedown

  • A pleasant and gentle comedown, leaving one invigorated.
  • Invigorated feeling persists until bedtime, followed by very good sleep with significant dream time.

Reagent testing

Recommended reagents
Expected reactions
MarquisOrange/brown (yohimbine alkaloid)
MandelinYellow → orange

Adulterant detection: Pausinystalia yohimbe — yohimbine content. Supplement products often under-dosed or mislabelled; standardised extract with COA is recommended.

Supplement adulteration/mislabelling is common. Marquis provides a basic alkaloid presence check. COA preferred.
