Primary effects

Negatives / side effects
- Regularly causes intense vomiting (purging), which is considered a necessary part of the experience, potentially alongside diarrhea.
- Can be physically demanding, especially if the user is already unwell or suffering from other ailments.
Aftereffects / comedown
- The positive effects, including enhanced gratitude and love, can persist for days, weeks, or even months after the ceremony.
- Users may feel exhausted and need significant rest following the intense psychedelic experience.

Adulterant detection: Ehrlich confirms DMT tryptamine content. Froehde reacts with harmala alkaloids (harmine, harmaline). Both components should be present in genuine ayahuasca.
Two-component test: Ehrlich for DMT/tryptamine content (Psychotria viridis or equivalent), Froehde for MAOI alkaloids (B. caapi or equivalent). An Ehrlich-only positive without Froehde suggests DMT without MAOI — oral activity may be lower.
