Kratom
Quick reference
Experience
Primary effects
- Kratom creates opiate-like effects, leading to a sense of well-being and physical numbness.
- Lower doses of certain strains can be energizing, while higher doses are more sedating.
- It acts as an anxiolytic and mood lifter, also relieving stress, cravings, and minor aches/pains.
Peak character
- The experience delivers a non-euphoric but engulfing sense of well-being, accompanied by a strange and pleasant physical numbness.
Negatives / side effects
- Redosing to extend effects is not very successful and can lead to a 'kratom hangover' with a solid headache the next morning.
- Kratom has real addiction potential; use caution and avoid making it a habit.
- The taste and even odor of kratom powder are often described as revolting by users.
Aftereffects / comedown
- A heavy kratom dose can result in a headache the following morning.
- There may be a subtle, non-intrusive longer-term come-down in the days following use.
Reagent testing
| Marquis | Orange → brown (mitragynine — indole alkaloid component) |
| Mecke | Blue → green/black |
| Froehde | Orange → brown/red |
Adulterant detection: Mitragyna speciosa — mitragynine/7-OH-mitragynine. Mecke blue/black is most characteristic. Adulteration with other opioid compounds is a significant risk in the illicit kratom market. Fentanyl has been found in adulterated kratom products.
Mecke is the best primary reagent for kratom. Fentanyl strip recommended, especially for extract products or unusually potent batches.
